Marcel Proust, Em Busca do Tempo Perdido

Lugares paralelos? Ou nem isso?

«Some of the problems of rapidly expanding education were those which were common to all countries at this stage of change and growth. The rapid increase in population meant that, even if the proportion of children of school age who were at school grew, the total number of children who were still not in school did not necessarily diminish. To accommodate as many as possible, schools were opened rapidly, classes were too large for effective teaching and most teachers were not well trained for their work. The results were seen at every level; in particular Arab education tended to be inadequate at secondary level, and students who went to university were on the whole not well trained for higher study. There was a tendency to concentrate on academic education which would lead to governmen service or liberal professions, rather than upon technical or vocational training; the use of the hands as well as the mind was alien to the concept of education in Islamic as in most other pre-modern cultures. The growth of the oil industry was making a diference, however [...]»

(HOURANI, Albert -- A History of the Arab Peoples. Londres: Faber and Faber, 2002 -- p. 390 e 391)
KO.
